Mammography

Mammography is an x-ray procedure to examine human breast for diagnosis and screening purposes.

We offer two types of mammography - screening and diagnostic mammograms, depending on the need and prescribed by family Physicians. 

Screening mammograms are performed for patients who have no symptoms of breast cancer.

Diagnostic mammograms are performed for patients of any age, who have specific breast symptoms such as new pain, lump or unusual changes to the breast or surrounding tissue. 


Test Preparations: Mammography

Before the test:

  • It is important to tell your physician if you think or confirmed you are pregnant .
  • Notify the technologist if have breast implants.
  • Daily medication is not restricted prior examination.
  • If you experience breast tenderness prior to your menstrual period you should try to schedule your examination for a time when your breasts will not be tender.

During the test:

  • Please avoid wearing talcum powder, lotion or deodorant near your breasts or under your arms on your test day, as you will be required to rinse it off prior to the examination.
  • It is best to wear comfortable  clothes which can be easily taken off as you need to remove it above your waist and put on a gown.
  • Any kind of jewelries are restricted during the examination.
  • The technologist will be asking you some questions regarding your previous medical information to allow the radiologist to better understand your medical health for optimal mammogram images interpretation. If you require assistance in answering these questions, please bring a family member or friend who can assist you.
  • During the examination, your breasts will be placed between mammography compression paddles that will gradually compress your breast. Two images will be taken of each breast, one from top to bottom and the other from side to side. For some people, the process can be mildly uncomfortable, however, compressing the breast tissue ensures we are able to obtain accurate images to allow proper diagnosis.

After the test:

  • Once the test is completed, your breasts may be tender; however, you can able to return to your normal activities. 


**Please bring previous mammogram done at other facility for comparison. Our office may contact you if Radiologist requires more views for the interpretation.
